I understand many drivers are reverse-engineered – I’m not talking about those. If all hardware vendors open sourced their drivers, it could affect their edge in the competitive market.
Think of it this way: Ubuntu is going to ship an improved version of Linux (the kernel). The Linux they’re shipping supports several hardware that the Linux from kernel.org doesn’t support.
When you’re drilling out the damaged fastener, you want to get the hole as dead center as possible, which can be challenging depending on the nature of the damage. Center-punch the broken fastener and drill a small pilot hole to get started. You do not want to, under any circumstance, break the extractor off in the fastener. Because the extractor is traditionally harder than most drill bits, you will then never be able to get the broken bolt out.
I know people are going to say that it’s important to have hardware just work out of the box, and indeed it is. But respecting the license of the software made available to you is a lot more important than that. If Ubuntu is so concerned about having hardware working out of the box, it could fund projects like nouveau.

I haven’t had time to do anything else. I should say I do have a GForce Titanium 128 MB graphics card, so I’m taking full advantage of Quartz Extreme. The acid test for me will be when I install it on our eMac. It does have a 32 MB graphics card, so that’s good, but we’ll see how the system performs on a consumer Mac then.
